A slice of Anthony's Coal Fired PizzaRecently opened, in the Whole Foods shopping center at the intersection of Turkey Lake Road and Sand Lake Road, is Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, a pizza chain started in South Florida. The inside of the restaurant is very open, with walls covered with black & white and color photographs of NY icons, and a few wide-screen TVs.

The menu is limited with just pizzas, a few side orders, grilled wings, and one dessert, NY-style cheesecake naturally, although there Bottled drinks onlyare some other sandwich and salad items available for lunch that are not on the main menu. There is no kids menu but you generally don't need one for a pizza place as everyone can dig into a pie. When the server came to get our drink order, we found out something interesting. Anthony's only serves bottled drinks (there is no soda fountain, although you can get wine by the glass). Since it was just me and my boys, we ordered two sweetened Gold Peak Tea bottles ($2.50), and one Minute Maid Lemonade ($2.50). There are also sodas available and unsweet tea. The Gold Peak teas were 16.9 oz bottles and the Lemonade was 20 oz which allowed for about a glass and a half each. The only problem was telling my kids to make it last as there are no free refills.

Pizza prices are pretty reasonable with a small 12" starting at $11.50 and a large 16" starting at $14.50. Toppings for the small start at $1.50 and for the large at $2.50, but there is a volume discount -- the more toppings, the less per each you pay. Toppings available are Italian sausage, fresh mushrooms, Calamata olives (yep, not just your regular black olives), prosciutto, Long Hot Finger Peppers (um, not exactly sure what these are), anchovies, onions, pepperoni, or sweet peppers. There are also Specialty pizzas for $15.95 for a small and $18.95 for a large. These looked very interesting such as the Meatball & Ricotta, the Frittata (Onion, pepper, and egg), Eggplant Marino, and more. For this visit, we ordered a large with 1/2 cheese and 1/2 mushrooms and olives ($17.00). We also order the Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad to start ($6.25).

Fresh Tomato and Mozzarella SaladOur salad arrived, with four large slices of deep red tomato, topped with thick slices of fresh mozzarella, many strands of basil, olive oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar. In the center was piled a mound of sweet peppers. BB and I each had two of the tomato stacks. The tomatoes were cold and fresh and the mozzarella was creamy, plus there was plenty of basil for each piece. We left the sweet peppers alone as we both aren't fans. Another side dish is the grilled chicken wings. We didn't order it but saw a plate of them pass by. It looked like a huge portion of grilled wings, settled on slices of foccacia bread and them completely covered with grilled onions. That doesn't really appeal to me, but it might to you!

As soon as we were done with the tomatoes, the pizza came out. Our half cheese and half mushroom/olive pizzaAs their motto implies, the pizza at Anthony's was definitely "well-done" which also means that the edges and bottom of the pie can look a bit charred. That was not a good thing for LB who instantly balked at eating the pizza. I had to cajole him into eating it. Of course, he just wanted the cheese. Unfortunately, the cheese had large "holes" of just sauce that he didn't like either. Oh, the curse of a picky eater!

BB and I loved the pizza. It has a sweet sauce that was more pronounced with the plain cheese side. The crust is a bread-like consistency, not doughy at all. The mushrooms were piled on generously although we were a little disappointed with the amount of olives. I know that Kalamata (on the menu they were spelled "Calamata) olives are typically a lot stronger in taste and a bit salty; maybe that is why there was only a sprinkling of finely chopped olives on the pie? Just wish there was more.

Between the three of us, we ate all but slices, which we took home to Hubby. I'll definitely be back, and I'm sure BB will want to come as well. We'll probably have to leave LB at home with Hubby, though.

Restaurant Review - Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, 7339 W. Sand Lake Road, #406, Orlando, FL

To contact us Click HERE
Menchie's Frozen YogurtMenchie’s Frozen Yogurt, located on Sand Lake Road’s “Restaurant Row”, is a fun, interactive dessert store. It is do-it-yourself with simple instructions: Fill your bowl with frozen yogurt. Top with snacks and candies and sauces. Weigh. Then pay. For 44 cents an ounce, you can get what you want, in the quantity you want. The concept is brilliant. The staff just makes sure the toppings are kept filled up and then monitor the scale as Pick Your Flavorscustomers finish their creations and weigh and pay.

Don’t worry if there is a crowd milling about inside. Remember, this is do-it-yourself. So, step right up, grab a bowl, and start pouring your frozen yogurt. There are 12 flavors every time, with only chocolate and vanilla staying the same, as far as I could tell. With more than 40 different flavors, including seasonal offerings like pumpkin and eggnog, rotating constantly, you will find a different variety available almost every time you visit. At the “Snackage” bar, where the dry toppings reside, are about 30 different types of add-ins, including nuts (peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans), candies (Reese’s Pieces, chocolate chips, yogurt chips, Jelly Bellies, M&M, Snow Caps, Gummy Bears, Rainbow Nerds, etc), cereals (Cap’n Crunch, Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, etc.) anSnackage Bard other toppings like coconut flakes, granola, and graham cracker crumbs. At the “Chill” bar, are freshly cut fruits such as strawberry slices, maraschino cherries, mango, kiwi, bananas, pineapple, as well as the decadent stuff such as mini-peanut butter cups, cookie dough balls, mini-cheesecake bits, and even mochi, a sticky Japanese confectioChill barn. Finally, there is the “Hotties” sauce bar with caramel, chocolate, peanut butter sauce, and hot fudge, as well as marshmallow sauce and non-dairy whipped topping.

On our first visit, I tried both the Pralines ‘n’ Cream and Pistachio frozen yogurt flavors and thought they made a great combination. I added pecans, coconut flakes, mini-cheesecake bites, and then topped that off with caramel sauce. BB was happily moving along, getting his yogurt and toppings while I helped LB put the yogurt flavors he wanted into his cup. By the time we reached the scale to weigh our creations, I glanced over and noticed my older son’s cup was completely filled to the top with yogurt and toppings. Oh dear, I should have been watching more closely. I had the staff weigh his separately from ours and, as I suspected, he had passed the pound mark! Yep, at 44 cents an ounce, he was looking at a $7.80 cup of dessert. The real test was, did he finish it? Of cYep, that's a pound of dessert!ourse not! Luckily, Menchie’s has lids to place on your creation so you can take it home if you want.

Next time, I walked in and was shocked to find that most of the flavors had changed and my Pralines ‘n’ Cream AND Pistachio were gone. After a moment, I realized this was probably a good thing so I could try some of the other flavors and I would not be stuckMuch better quantity in a rut getting the same flavors every single time. This time, I did a Cookies ‘n’ Cream and Cheesecake swirl (if two flavors are in the same machine, you can do a swirl), and then added some of the French Vanilla flavor. I also added some different toppings, trying peanuts this time, Snow Caps, and strawberry slices.

You can also try tastes of the different flavors first with the provided mini paper cups. This is actually a pretty good idea. I did not try the Cappucino flavor before I added it to my cup and when I was eating it later, it had a very strong coffee taste (it should have been called Espresso instead). So definitely taste-test if you are not sure what a flavor will taste like.

This visit, I watched BB like a hawk, and stopped him several times by the yogurt machines as I saw him place too much of each flavor in his cup. I also had to watch him at the toppings bar as I discovered he was putting scoop after scoop of chocolate chips into his bowl. “Hey, this is a yogurt shop, not a candy store!”

LB was more adventurous than I thought, trying more than just chocolate and vanilla and venturing to the Irish Mint and the Cheesecake flavors, though his favorite was Cookies ‘n’ Cream. This time, all of our creations came out to around $15 total , putting us closer to the 10-12 ounces per cup mark.

This is currently the only Menchie’s location in Florida, although another is planned for Fort Lauderdale. The shopping area it is in has several other restaurants so parking can be tight. However, there are “30 minutes or less” parking spots right in front. Menchie’s has already become a habit with us and I look forward to going every couple of weeks, especially to discover the new flavors in store for us.

Restaurant Review - TooJay's Original Gourmet Deli, 10185 West Colonial Drive, Ocoee, FL

To contact us Click HERE

If you are looking for enormous corned beef sandwiches on thick-cut rye bread with hot deli mustard, then TooJay’s Original Gourmet Deli is for you. But TooJay’s has a lot more than just deli food, although that is their specialty.

In fact, when we recently dined at the Ocoee location for dinner, it took me a while to read through the regular menu and special dinner menu. There are soups, salads, and sandwiches, plus dinner entrees such as meatloaf, lasagna, pot roast, and also baked salmon with dill sauce, peppercorn crusted steak, and even vegetarian options. All of the dinner entrees come with slices of rye bread on the side and a choice of soup or salad. There are also specialty drinks such as old-fashioned egg creams and Dr. Brown sodas.

The kid’s menu also offers a lot of choices as well with grilled cheese, hot dog, peanut butter and jelly, French bread pizza, or mac-n-cheese (available for $3.75), and hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken tenders salad, chicken tenders, or a Jr. tuna melt (available for $4.75). While the kids’ entrees don’t include a drink, they do include a choice of two of the following: applesauce, French fries, Mandarin oranges, red grapes, chocolate pudding, mini Black and White cookie, or carrot sticks with Ranch dressing. The hard part is trying to convince your kids that they cannot choose both the chocolate pudding and Black and White cookie as their sides.

Grandpa decided on a hot Pastrami sandwich on rye bread ($7.95) which comes with cole slaw and a pickle. He also elected to get an extra side of fries ($1.75). The sandwich had the meat rolled on the bread and was a huge amount. However, for those with an even bigger appetite, TooJay’s offers the Jaynormous sandwich ($14.95) that has a pound and a half of your favorite deli meat. I can’t even imagine eating that! Grandpa loved the Pastrami and said it was very lean and delicious.

Grandma, went for sweet and ordered the Cheese Blintzes dinner ($10.75). This is three crepes filled with a sweetened cottage cheese, fried, and served with fruit topping and sour cream. Since it was a dinner, it also came with the rye bread and Grandma ordered the cup of matzo ball soup as her appetizer. The soup was very flavorful with chunks of carrots and celery and a large, but light, matzo ball that fills the whole cup. She polished off all of the blintzes, smearing each with the blueberry fruit topping and sour cream first.

Knowing how large the portions of food at TooJay’s are, I decided on the Half Sandwich and Soup or Salad ($7.95), ordering a Corned Beef on rye and a cup of the matzo ball soup as well. I put a bit of the hot mustard on the sandwich and yum! The corned beef was very lean and the matzo ball soup was comfort food at its best.

LB ordered the peanut butter and jelly sandwich with applesauce and chocolate pudding on the side ($3.75). The sandwich was cut into quarters, which was nice, although my son thought there was too much jelly (I’ll have to order “light jelly” next time). He, of course, wanted to dig into the chocolate pudding as soon as they set down his plate, but I pulled it off his plate until he finished his dinner.

BB ordered the French Bread Pizza, with French fries and the Black and White mini-cookie ($3.75). The pizza was a small baguette sliced diagonally with sauce and cheese and was pretty good. He actually got full on the pizza and fries and had to take the cookie home.

All of the adults were also full so we didn’t order any desserts although they are very tempting. Besides large slices of chocolate cake, TooJay’s also has smaller desserts such as the mini-cookies and mini-Napoleans and mini-Eclairs. In fact, you have to pass the deli and dessert counter on the way out and we ended up getting a little dessert “to go” to eat at home later.

Free Discounted Silver Dollar City Ticket

How To Get Free, or Discounted Silver Dollar City Tickets

If you are looking for free 2012 Silver Dollar City tickets you are probably already well aware at how expensive it is to take your family to one of the best amusement parks in the country.  I have lived in Branson since 1992 so I can honestly tell you that your nobody is going to give you free Silver Dollar City tickets.  However, there are some ways to get a FREE all day pass for yourself and your entire family!  This can literally save you hundreds of dollars and that is not exaggerating a bit!

If you have ever been to Branson before you have probably seen "discount" ticket booths, tents, and tourist centers that promise (usually on huge signs) insanely cheap or free tickets.  All you have to do is..........   Ahhhhh, all you have to do is...... Here it comes..... Here it comes..... Here comes the catch.  Nearly all (99.999%) of these "discount" ticket booths will set you up with an appointment to a timeshare resort.  You will have to wait until your tour comes up.  You then get to go on tour with timeshare salesman trying to get you to buy a timeshare.. I won't even get into the expense of the timeshares.  That's a whole other article that I'll get to at some point.  The point is to get two free tickets (I honestly don't think that they offer Silver Dollar City free tickets anymore.  Too expensive) to a Branson Show you have to drive out to a timeshare resort, take a two hour tour.  Then before you get your TWO tickets you go into an office with a timeshare salesman.  Now you get the sales pitch behind closed doors.  Sounds fun huh?  This how you expected to spend 4 hours of your vacation?..  After the sales pitch, do you get the tickets?  Well, yeah, but you will be sent to their gifting center.  Wherever that is!  It's usually not right at the resort!  So, you have to find the gifting center to FINALLY get your ticket coupons.

Is There A Better Way To Get Free Discount Silver Dollar City Ticket? Yes!

So, is their a better way?  Yes.  If you purchase Silver Dollar City tickets from the Branson Tourism Center they have a deal set up that will give you a 2 day pass for the price of one.  So, basically if you pay for one day you get the 2nd day for free.  This is big savings and really the best deal you will get in Branson.  That's just a simple fact folks.  So, what's the catch?  Their really isn't one.  The only stipulation is that the second day must be used within two operating days of the first visit.  So, if you go to Silver Dollar City on Thursday you only have Friday OR Saturday to use the second day of the coupon pass.  If you have a family of 5 you will literally save over 200 dollars!  No timeshare tours, no hoops to jump through, no sales pitch.. Nada...None!

One more FACT that I want to share is that if you buy Silver Dollar City's and most ticket brokers like Ticketmaster, Stub Hub, etc...... you get charged insane processing fees.  If you have bought tickets from agencies like this before you know exactly what I'm talking about! The Branson Tourism Center is the only place I know that doesn't charge you ANY fee to purchase tickets.  The price that you see is the price you get and the price you see is INCLUDING tax.  No hidden fees, no processing fees, no sales pitch.  Easy online ordering.  You can print off your coupon passes or you can even pick them up when you arrive to Branson!  This is the ONLY Branson ticket agency that offers this deal with no hidden schemes or sales pitch.  This is the only online ticket agency that I know of that doesn't charge processing fees.

Oh, and if you have never been to Silver Dollar City before, you are in for a treat!  You can come when it opens and spend the entire day until the park closes.  You simply can't do it all in one day.  It will take two days to fully appreciate the Silver Dollar City experience!  They have over 20 heart stopping rides, and roller coasters.  Kiddie rides, playgrounds, water parks, etc..  They have 40 shows, street entertainment, craft shops, and mouth watering food.  The entire park has trees everywhere so it's easy to escape the sun..  They even have motorized carts for older guests or those who have trouble walking.  Yes, there is a lot of walking involved but there are also plenty of places to kick back and relax.

I hope this article enlightened you and I hope this saves you and your family TONS of money.  If you found this article helpful, please leave a comment below or like us on Facebook.  Bookmark us and come back to read unbiased show reviews, attraction recommendations etc...  If I don't like a show I'll let you know about it and I'll tell you why!  I get free tickets to all the shows because I work for a Branson show.  Just a backstage hand.  No bias towards any show really.  I have seen them most because hey, they are free (or only 5 bucks) so why not? I love free entertainment ;)

Purchase Silver Dollar City Tickets and Get Second Day For FREE!! Now That's A Discount!

Listed below is the schedule that will take you to the ticket agency that offers the second day free coupon with NO strings attached.  Simply click on a date that your interested in coming to Branson on the schedule below and your in business.  Only takes a couple of clicks and you can either print off your tickets, have them sent to you, or pick them up when you arrive to Branson.  It's as easy as it gets, and the best one stop online shopping for Branson tickets that you will find.  No hidden fees.  No processing fees. You can even book your entire vacation here, including your hotel stay!!  They even have discount vacation packages. It has it all folks, minus the BS..  I stake my reputation on this, and I have been living here since 1992!

Reflections on Birthday Number Five

To contact us Click HERE
Way back when I was younger and single I always wondered what would ever possess someone to have children. My main influence in this was my first nephew; he and my sister came to stay with us during his first 2 years of life. I was a self-centered 12 yr old...as most 12 yr olds are. I rensented the intrusion of a self-centered baby (as all babies are). At age 12 one sees all the trouble, work and distraction that go into raising a child. One does not see how a child can add anything to life.

When I grew old and married I began to see things differently. I began to believe that a child might add something to my life. Ellen came along soon after this revelation. But it was not until AFTER she entered our lives that I realized how much a child can add to your life. And how the trouble, work and distraction are more than compensated by love, laughter and the satisfaction of seeing a life being formed.

For five years I have marvelled at her growth, watched her personality form, and laughed with her.

What fun to see her smile!

Yikes

OK. That was quite a long break from blogging.

I am back.

Not that I have too much to blog about.

Let's see. What has been happening in the past over-a-month since I have blogged?

On March 5th I weaned my last bottle baby. We've had 2 bull calves come along, but no one has dropped a little heifer calf since then; almost a full month.

A couple of weeks ago hubby took the bigger heifers back to their summer pasturage; in Windyville and Long Lane. This means I am only graining 2 groups up the road again.

Last Monday the 4-wheeler got a flat tire up the road one morning while I was doing the graining. I fed them, then hiked the 3/4 mile home in my rubber boots.

Note to self (and anyone else who'd like some advice): avoid hiking on concrete in rubber boots; not real nice on your feet.

I went to a wedding shower, and the subsequent wedding. Lovely.

Ellen had her 5 yr checkup last Wed. She did not take well to the booster shots; FOUR of them. She had nasty reaction to one of them. It is still a little bruised, even now.

Day after tomorrow I am taking Ellen in for her kindergarten registation and screening. I am doing this with great trepidation. Ellen, I am sure, is going to take a notion to be contrary. It is my guess she will neither speak to the interviewer, nor do any sort of cooperating whatsoever.

I also pulled up the carpet in the front room and put down adhesive vinyl floor tile. This sounds super easy in one sentence, but it was a long drawn-out process as I had to sandwich it all in between everything else. We still have yet to put down the metal strips.

Time to fix supper.

Gotta go.

Fat Tuesday

(OK they have changed blogger around since last I was here, I hope this works.)

I have joined The Lumberjack's Wife this month of May in her Fat Tuesday program.

Click here: Fat Tuesday, for the link to her blog, and if it seems good unto you, you can join too! The more the merrier, yes?

My health goals for this months are:

1) Walk. As in every day. For at least half hour, if not much, much longer.

You should be proud of me. Walking in backwoods Missouri is fraught with many dangers...stray hunters not the least. You just never know when a turkey hunter may show up on your back 40 somewhere. (Thus there will be no potty breaks behind bushes.)

My walking areas generally consist of cow pastures. (Dairy Daze, you know, life on the dairy and all that jazz.) Cow pastures in spring are filled with ticks, chiggers (yes, they are out early this year, I am scratching a couple of bites as I type), and wandering snakes. Though copperheads are generally nocturnal, such knowledge isn't terribly comforting.

Today on my walk I was distracted by a small alligator snapping turtle. They aren't dangerous, but are fun to watch. When you approach them turn around and stick their butts up in the air at you. I suppose they think a predator will attack their behinds instead of their heads. And...

What? Oh, I guess should come up with more goals.

2) Avoid sugar.

Heaven help me. I have already given up coffee as of last July. And I have given up chips and soda as of about 3 months ago, I forget exactly when. But sugar is my main pitfall. It is just found in SO many things. And I like it so much. Argh!

3) Free weights.

I am going to try and work on my arms and upper body strength. This is for various reasons. Number one is to burn more calories. Number two is because it helps build up your bones. I am getting elderly, (heh heh heh) I don't want to get osteoporosis (or however you spell it.)to set in.

4) Pray more and read my Bible more.

I believe spiritual health and physical health go hand in hand.

5) Eat better.
I guess this goes without saying, but I thought I ought to say it anyway.

These are my very basic goals. Good luck everyone!

This past weekend, on Saturday, we went to the barbecue at above named company.  They are the ones hubby gets water well supplies from.  Every spring they have a barbecue with mounds and mounds of food and tons of prizes.  I think I have written about them before.  They have games for the kids, and for the ladies.  Then they have the big prize drawing at the end of the whole shindig.
Ellen looks forward to this every year.  She calls it the Cake Walk, because the first year we went they did have a cake walk there.
This year however, they did not have a cake walk, but had 3 of those inflatable party type games.  See below.  They also did face painting, or feathers in your hair.  Ellen opted for the feather.  See below.
She loved this baseball one.  The cone blew up a stream of air that would keep the little balls floating.  She was pretty good at giving them a whack.  She didn't make it into any of the holes in the back wall, but she didn't even realize that was what you were supposed to do.
This is Daddy; showing her the basics of the game.
Now here she is trying it for herself:                                   (It always works better when you stick out your tongue a bit!  Ha.)                                (Behind her you can see there's a basketball dealy.  On the other side of the baseball                                     one there's a bouncy house; Ellen would have none of it...AT ALL!)

This year for the ladies they had Bingo.  Ellen and I played.  I won the imitation plant, Ellen won the little jewelry case.  Then they had the door prize drawings.  Ellen won a little canvas kid-sized fold out camp chair (I forgot to take a pic of it), I won nothing, and Hubby, Hubby the bah-humbug-anti-TV dude, WON the big screen TV!  The second to the last prize and he WON it.
What a HOOT!  I just laughed and laughed.
In the seven plus years we have been married we have never owned a television.  We don't really watch it.  Now we have one.  Ellen says she wants to watch her movies on it instead of on the computer.  We will have to figure out how to hook it all up.  Oh the joys of being blessed.
                                 Ha ha!

Judge appoints receiver for Legends Outlets Kansas City

To contact us Click HERE
A federal judge appointed a receiver Tuesday for Legends Outlets Kansas City.

In its proposal to act as receiver for the Legends, Los Angeles-based E3 Realty Advisors Inc. said it would explore repositioning or selling the shopping district. E3 concluded the sale of a regional mall in Cincinnati in March.

E3 recommended retaining Michigan-based Horizon Group Properties as property manager and leasing broker, replacing RED Development LLC of Kansas City.

U.S. Bank , the trustee for a group of securitized loans that includes a $137 million construction loan for the Legends, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District of Kansas on May 18 seeking to foreclose. The bank claims that Legends owners owe $179.4 million and that the property is worth between $95 million and $112.5 million. RED has a 5 percent stake in the shopping center.

Horizon manages outlet malls in the Midwest and South along with Tennessee-based CBL & Associates Properties. Horizon and CBL opened the 83-store, fully-leased Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City in August 2011.

Another potential manager, E3 said, would be Chicago-based Urban Retail Properties, which oversees regional malls in Manhattan and Salina.

In a hearing Tuesday, Legends attorney Jeffrey Dutson of King & Spalding LLP in Atlanta said the mall agreed to E3’s appointment because its loan documents called for a receiver in the event of a default. The Legends stopped making loan payments in October.

Outlet Malls Springing Up in Moscow

To contact us Click HERE
The Belaya Dacha outlet center, whose first phase is scheduled to open in July, is already 95 percent leased out.
By Lena Smirnova  - The Moscow Times

Russians are not ones to pass by a good sale — even if the conditions for such discount shopping require nearly inhuman resilience and patience.

Vera Setskaya, partner in the international property adviser GVA Sawyer, visited one self-titled outlet in the country and equated shopping there to rummaging in a haystack.

“It’s a pile of hay,” Setskaya said at the Shopping Malls of Russia conference Tuesday. “Any number of items are brought there, and any retailers are taken in just to fill up the space.”

An authentic outlet center needs to be selective about its merchants and target audiences, she said.

Developers and investors are eager to open such Western-style outlets in Russia, but retailers may be hard to get on board.

There are currently no complexes in the country with multiple outlets in one location, but three are under construction in Moscow.

The first phase of Outlet Village Belaya Dacha will open in July 2012 and is already 95 percent leased out. Levi’s, Calvin Klein Jeans, Nike and Lacoste are among the brands that have taken the space. Vnukovo Outlet Village is expected to open in August and Fashion House Outlet Center in November.

Outlet centers sell products that are overstocked, slightly damaged, from last season or made specifically for outlets, at discounts of 30 to 70 percent off regular prices.

The outlets are traditionally located in rural or tourist locations. A strip configuration is most common, although some are enclosed malls, and others can be arranged in a village cluster, said Charles Slater, head of retail services at Cushman & Wakefield.

Developers argue that outlets offer a profitable retail alternative in a market that is oversaturated with traditional shopping malls.

They enjoyed a 100 percent success rate for their mall projects five years ago because there was virtually no competition from rival developers and retailers weren’t picky about their locations, said Tatyana Klyuchinskaya, regional director of real estate consulting firm Colliers International. But since the number of traditional malls has spiked — even quadrupling in Ufa — outlet developments have started to look more lucrative.

“The typical Russian consumer is very much brand-led and value conscious — a perfect combination for the success of outlet centers in Russia,” Slater said.

But retailers and local distributors of foreign brands are still hard to persuade to open discount locations. There may be a conflict between the brand’s head office and its local distributors if the former proposes opening an outlet close to a regular retail point.

“[The local representative] is the only way for the brand to enable the supply and sale of its products in this market,” said Waldemar Weiss, vice president of real estate consulting company NAIBecar.

“The brand is afraid of losing the market. He can lose everything.”

Although foreign brands are considered key to the success of an outlet center, there are still no more than 10 new brands coming to Russia each year.

“To be presented in an outlet, a brand needs to have X number of regular stores in the country,” Setskaya said. “Because our retail segment is still not very developed, many names don’t exist, so even if they wish to, they can’t open an outlet center.”

Setskaya remains optimistic that the segment will develop quickly once the right retailers are enlisted.
Slater said that Moscow can support four to five outlets, each geared at 3 million to 4 million customers. St. Petersburg and the regions are also on the radar for developers, which is good news for discount shoppers.

“Not very rich people will go to outlets for the discounts because there they can buy quality products for lower prices. But very rich people will also go to outlets because nobody will pass up an opportunity to buy something with a discount,” Setskaya said.

Grapevine approves $14M for Mills mall improvements

Steven R. Thompson - Staff Writer- Dallas Business Journal
The Grapevine City Council approved $14 million in incentives Tuesday night for expected improvements to the Grapevine Mills mall.

The incentives, allocated from a tax increment financing district, will go toward an estimated $40 million upgrade, according to the Star-Telegram. The council agreed on $10 million in interior upgrades and $4 million for the exterior.

City officials were not immediately available for comment Wednesday morning, but City Manager Bruno Rumbelow spoke with the Dallas Business Journal about the need for improvements earlier this month.

Rumbelow said the mall, which opened in October of 1997 and is now owned by Simon Property Group, needs a series of physical upgrades such as better lighting and flooring.

“We’ve been talking to them about a renovation project, basically making the inside of that mall new again, for the last two years,” Rumbelow said.

And Grapevine officials have even made trips to other Simon malls to see what could be done at Grapevine Mills. In April, city officials traveled to Opry Mills in Nashville to tour a recent renovation after a flood in 2010. It was something Indianapolis-based Simon wanted to show off as a possible renovation of Grapevine Mills.

“They really wanted us to take a look at it, because in terms of what that mall will be, that mall is a nice template,” Rumbelow said.

The biggest change that would take place in a Grapevine Mills renovation would be an upgrade to the tenant base.

“There need to be stores that draw a higher demographic shopper with a higher spend per person,” Rumbelow said.

Rumbelow mentioned brands like Michael Kors and Brooks Brothers, which are in the Opry Mills, as possible tenants in the new Grapevine Mills.

The higher tenant base leads to higher sales tax revenue for the city, Rumbelow said. Grapevine Mills is the city’s largest source of sales tax revenue.

But will customers who like the current tenant base at Grapevine Mills be driven away by higher priced luxury items? Rumbelow wasn’t sure, but was more concerned with attracting those customers that spend more at the mall.

“The customer base that the premium stores cater to is here in large numbers,” Rumbleow said. “We just have to get them specifically to our center."

Fat Tuesday-The Wednesday Edition

To contact us Click HERE

Yesterday morning, whilst I was out in the garden burning calories, my husband approached on the 4-wheeler.  I knew something was up.
Yes.  He had this great idea.  He was in pursuit of yet another member to add to our Homestead....a bucket truck.  A bucket truck that was 150 miles (give or take a few) away.  Would I go with him?  Hmmm....
So yesterday, instead of blogging my Fat Tuesday post, I took a 300 mile round trip up north of Lake of the Ozarks.  And, yes, we now have said bucket truck.  That would be another story. For another day.
In the meantime.  I have had some Fat Tuesday successes and fails.
Exercise:  Success.  I have been keeping up with my walking fairly well.  Yes, I have. And, as my reward, so far I haven't acquired any tick or chigger bites...yet.  When I haven't walked, I have done my Santa imitation in the garden...you know, "hoe, hoe, hoe."
Heh heh heh.
(That's actually my husband's joke, so don't roll your eyes at me, please.  Thanks)
Rigorous hoeing actually is great ab work; ask me how I know.  My abs are very sore.  I spend an hour or more out there hoeing; mostly weeds, but I have had to hoe out hills for squash...etc, too.
Then, here, I MUST confess.  There were a couple of days last week when it was way too stinky hot and humid to get outside and exercise.  So I turned on the A/C and exercised in the front room to a DVD.
Don't laugh too hard, but these are the guys I exercised with:

The Wiggles

Laugh all you want, but when you stop, remember; there's a reason these guys are so skinny.  If you do not know who they are you obviously don't have small children in your home.  And, truth to tell, you aren't missing too terribly much.  I actually think the show is rather asinine.  Ellen loves them however.
Ellen has a DVD by title of "Hot Potatoes-The Best of the Wiggles."  There are 35 of their "most loved" songs on it, some 50 + minutes of dancing around.
And really.  Do I want to watch some skinny chick (like Jillian somebody-or-another) dancing around in her tight clothes...the likes of which I'd never put on my body?
Or would I rather watch some vaguely attractive men dance around?
Men, it is.
Besides, they have great accents.  No?
Oh, the rest of my goals...
Well, mostly they fell by the wayside.  I have done some freeweight stuff.  I will have to post pics of that.  And I HAVE been praying and reading the Bible and all that too.
Sugar avoidance?  Ummm...epic fail.
There's always this coming week.
Right?RIGHT!
(For some reason my text is centering itself, much like "The Lumberjack's Wife" blog.  I am not doing this in deliberate imitation of her.  But it seems to work anyway.)

The Bucket Truck

The newest member of our farm.  Here is hubby trying it out to work on the windmill.  He said he was a little nervous up in it the first time.

He also said that when we get to using it regularly he will have a harness for me to use when *I* am up in.  As in ME.
This is because he says he needs to be on the ground to figure out what went wrong should it ever break down.  Once the motor stops, for whatever reason, and you are up in the air...well...
You are up there until the motor is started again.Funny husband.

Fat Tuesday-The Taters and Mole Edition

Yay me!  I HAVE been exercising most every day; at least 5 days per week; walking and weights.  I have been reading my Bible and praying-though once again, not as much as I ought.  And I have been doing much much better at avoiding sugar; at least for the past 3 days.  Ha.

On Saturday I had a bit of a shock.  I have been trying to do most of these things for the past month, the exercising part anyway.  But when I checked the scales on Sat I'd gained instead of lost!

AACCKK!!!!  (I would like to think it's because I've build up muscle, which weighs more than fat, but alas, I doubt that's the case.  Ha)

So, that was when I started recording what I eat, AND counting all the calories.  I am going ot have to find one of those websites where you can record what you eat and THEY will tabulate the calories.

Anyway.  On to my story; because I promised you stories to go along with these Fat Tuesday posts.

So the number one rule of thumb here on the dairy is that when it comes to exercise, regular chores do NOT count.  If regular chores counted as exercise, you (read: I) wouldn't be fat in the first place.

Right?

YES.  RIGHT!

BUT, come gardening time I count it as exercise because it's not something I do year round.

So anyway.  Hubby was down at his mom's this morning and called me from there to see if I could come down and help ridge potatoes.  (This means he tilled between the rows and then you come along and pull the dirt up around the plant where the spuds will develop.)

YAY!  Some exercise!  Ellen and I went down there and I helped ridge potatoes. With 3 of us (Ellen helped rather halfheartedly for 3 minutes, then she sat on a bench and worked in one of her workbooks that she'd brought along.) working it only took about 1/2 hour to do 3 rows.

We'd just finished and were congratulating ourselves on a job well done, when Ellen piped up and said; "Look, look!  What's that?"

Crawling on the ground not 3 feet from her was a HUGE mole.  He was about to dive back under the ground when my husband took a few bouncing leaps with his long legs and landed on the top of the it just as it was about to escape.

Then, not one to pass up a learning moment; hubby picked up the dead mole (which was still intact, though thoroughly dead) and had a biology lesson with Ellen.  They looked at its weird pointy snout, its big shovel-like front feet and stubby tail.

Ellen was fascinated.  She has not yet learned to be grossed out by dead things and I am glad of that.  She might was well get used to the fact that animals die and not to be squeamish about it.

At any rate; as a footnote to that story; we are having an all out war on moles here; they are taking over everything.  And they eat our earthworms, we want our earthworms for our gardens.

That's all.  Happy Fat Tuesday-ing everyone!

Fat Tuesday-The Wedding Shower Edition

Hmmmm...yeah.  What do they serve at wedding showers?  Broccoli?  Carrots?  A nice fruit tray?
Ummm...no.
But, well.  It WAS Sunday afternoon.  And I had already decided that Sunday is the day of the week that I am going to cut myself a break and splurge a weeeeee tad.  So I had a cup of punch and a polite chunk of cake.
It is gratifying to note that after a week of avoiding sugary things anything with sugar in it now tastes cloyingly sweet.
And I did try the Skinny Chunky Monkey cookies as suggested by the Lumberjack's Wife.  I will post a link if I ever get time.  Needless to say, with no eggs or sugar, they taste like a vegan dessert, but in a pinch they will satisfy your sweet tooth.  Hubby ate a couple and pronounced them "OK" and probably would eat them if there were nothing else sweet in the house.  But Ellen was totally unimpressed; "they taste funny."
Five year olds.  Gotta trust them to come out with the truth.
I have been faithful to exercise at least 5 days a week.  Except I may not get to today.  This morning I went a picked 2ish gallons of cherries.  (Thank You Lord for friends who will share their fresh fruit.)
The problem with that is once you get 2ish gallons of cherries you have to clean them.  These aren't the great big Bing cherries I am used to in the northwest; these are the little pie cherries.
Question for the week; How many pits in just 2 quarts of pie cherries?
Way too many.
BUT.
I am going to plant these cherry pits and attempt to grow my own cherry trees.
Because I am crazy like that.
But, in the meantime here's some awesome, super, great news;
My diligence in counting calories and exercising is paying off.
At least 3 pounds gone!
YAY FOR ME!

Case of the Disappearing Sign

To contact us Click HERE
It was my fault.  I'll just say that from the beginning.

It's that time of the year again; elections are coming.  And well before any election the campaign signs start popping up like mushrooms.  We have quite a bit of road-front property, so we get a few requests for sign posting.  This is OK.  We don't let anyone know how we vote so we give sign posting rights quite freely to most anyone who asks nicely.

No problem.

We have one stipulation:

Just one.

No signs near the house.

A couple weeks ago the son of one candidate who is running to oust the incumbent...I'll refrain from naming names or offices...but if you are local I'll just say the incumbent goes to our church and you will know of whom I speak.

Anyway.  The opponent's son stopped by and asked hubby if he could put up a sign.  "Sure, sure;  no problem.  Put it up there a ways."

So he did put it up there.

Well, I was annoyed to go out and find it near my garden.  I'd thought hubby meant like 1/2 mile up the road "a ways."  So I yanked it up and took it up there MY definition of "a ways" and told hubby later.  Well, I could tell he was annoyed, so I went up there and brought it back a "ways" closer.

Apparently it wasn't close enough.

The son stopped back in on his way by and asked us where the sign was.  Hubby explained.

The son CALLED us.  From home, after he'd gone by where said sign was supposed to be.

HE CALLED US!!! to ask where the sign was.  (it had fallen over and wasn't visible in the grass)

Hubby explained again.  Then went up there and set it back up.

A few days later the sign was MIA.

Gone.

Hmmm....

We figure we'd offended him so much he just yanked it and gave it to a true supporter who'd allow it to be posted in the yard.

Well.  To me it seems a little on the obsessive/compulsive side to stop in again and then CALL about your political sign.  But I guess if you'd paid money for it you might want to put it where it'd make the most impact.  I dunno.

I just thought it was funny.

Plantation Resort Owners Win Big

Driving to Myrtle Beach on Highway 501, Danny and Mary Lou Dukes, made an impromptu visit that paid off big! The couple are owners at Plantation Resort and had made the trip to the beach countless times. However, just as they entered Aynor, South Carolina they decided to take a break at The Official Myrtle Beach Welcome Center.
Danny and Mary Lou Dukes: Owners at Plantation Resort

In addition to securing coupons, free coffee and clean bathrooms the couple took 5 extra minutes to enter the Welcome Center's drawing. They noticed the contest had weekly, monthly and a grand-prize giveaway which meant the likelihood of winning was on their side. The weekly prize was a 3-day, 2-night Myrtle Beach vacation, the monthly prize was a 50 inch Flat Screen TV and the grand-prize giveaway was a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Keeping their fingers crossed, they submitted their names and headed back out on the 501.

Having almost forgotten about the drawing, Mr. & Mrs. Dukes received a phone call a  month later informing them that they were the winners of the 50 inch Flat Screen TV for April! They couldn't believe their luck!

The Welcome Center asked Plantation Resort to sponsor the accommodations portion of the contest and we were happy to oblige. As a sponsor of the giveaway, we were excited to hear that one of our Owners had won and won big! Congratulations, Danny and Mary Lou!

Planning to drive to Myrtle Beach this summer? Visit The Official Welcome Center of Myrtle Beach for coupons, discounted tickets, clean bathrooms and a chance to win all summer long! Who knows, we might be writing about you next!

Summertime accommodations are still available at Plantation Resort. Please call 1-800-845-5039 to make a reservation before they're all gone!
